sougen – Flat Brush for Grass and Blending
Developed Specifically for Painting Grass in Animation Backgrounds

We created this specialized brush for painting grass in response to background artists' challenges with achieving the natural randomness of scattered brush tips.

Many artists told us how difficult it is to control brush tips to create the irregular, scattered strokes needed for painting grass. That’s why we set out to design a brush that makes this easier—while also being suitable for blending and gradients, much like a Kara brush.

The result is the Animation Flat Brush – Tomorrow’s Grassland.
With its wide brush head, it is ideal for quickly painting large areas of grass. At the same time, its shape makes it useful for blending smaller sections and creating smooth transitions.

The tip is designed to naturally form jagged edges, helping to create organic grass strokes with ease.
Its 30mm-long hair allows the brush to spread open, enabling artists to vary their brush patterns depending on how it is manipulated—offering great flexibility and control.

Besides grass painting and spot blending, this brush can also be used to create soft, cloudy textures or subtle atmospheric effects.
We designed this tool with the hope that it would bring more enjoyment to background artists—making the process of painting scenery even more rewarding.

All of our animation brushes are tested using materials widely adopted in the animation industry, including New TMK Poster Extra Thick paper (by Muse) and poster colors (by Nicker).

Each brush is handcrafted in Kumano, Hiroshima, a town celebrated as Japan’s brush-making capital.
Our artisans continue to uphold time-honored techniques, crafting each brush with care and respect for Japan’s artistic heritage.
