Brush head length: 24mm
Description: Used for blurring large surfaces such as backgrounds in animation background art, Japanese and ink paintings.
This Kara brush is designed specifically for hand-painted animation backgrounds. It is used after applying color to water-stretched paper, for purposes such as blending colors, smoothing uneven paint application, and softening the edges of gradients.
The brush uses deer hair, and the moderate spacing between the hairs at the tip makes it especially suitable for producing visible brush textures when blending.
Unlike traditional Japanese Kara brushes, which typically use very stiff deer hair all the way to the tip, this brush is made with slightly softer and smoother deer hair at the tip. This ensures it glides gently over the paper surface without catching or damaging delicate textures.
Deer hair is characterized by thick strands that taper to fine tips, naturally creating gaps between the hairs. This structure makes it easy to leave intentional brush marks.
As you use the brush, the tip may gradually become damp. However, with this Kara brush, simply rubbing the tip lightly with a towel will dry it quickly. It's highly recommended for background artists in animation who seek both expressive control and efficient workflow, such as when depicting metallic textures or surface finishes.
Of course, it can also be used in Nihonga (traditional Japanese painting). Compared to harder-tipped deer hair Kara brushes, this one leaves softer brush marks, making it ideal for use on delicate or coarse-textured washi paper where you want to avoid damaging the fibers.
Please note: this brush is used dry, without absorbing water. (Caution: do not soak the brush in water.)
Because deer hair is hollow at the center, soaking or leaving it wet can cause moisture to enter and lead to root rot. If dark pigments remain on the tip, you may briefly dip only the tip into water to rinse it. Afterward, rub it with a towel and it will dry quickly.
All of our brushes and tools for animation are tested using “New TMK Poster Extra Thick” paper by Muse and poster colors by Nicker—both commonly used in animation background art.
Our products are handcrafted by skilled artisans in Kumano, Hiroshima, a town renowned as the heart of traditional Japanese brush-making. We take pride in preserving Japanese cultural heritage, and every brush is carefully made with devotion and craftsmanship.
