# Maki-e Fine Detail Series
Choose from four distinct brush types, each offering a different painting feel to match your technique and application.
The Kouyou Makie-fude gokuboso was developed for artists who prefer a softer brush tip capable of producing delicate line work together with smooth, controlled paint application in Maki-e, ceramic decoration, Kintsugi, and other detailed work.
---
## A Brush Tip Designed for Fine Lines and Paint Capacity
The brush tip combines **Saikouhou**, one of the highest grades of goat hair known for its exceptionally fine natural tips and excellent point formation, with flexible nylon fibers.
By replacing the weasel hair used in the Roukou model with nylon, Kouyou offers a more affordable alternative while preserving the exceptionally delicate brush tip made possible by Saikouhou.
Because nylon holds less lacquer or paint than natural hair, its proportion has been carefully limited, allowing Saikouhou goat hair to remain the primary material.
Compared with Roukou, Kouyou has gentler resilience and spring. When the brush touches the surface, the tip follows naturally with a subtle, slightly adhesive feel.
In the Fine Detail Series, the hair diameter has been increased to **1.4 mm**, providing greater paint capacity than the Ultra Fine Detail Series while maintaining excellent control for delicate line work and detailed filling.
Although the lines are slightly broader than those produced by Roukou, the brush produces calm, controlled strokes without the tip reacting too sharply.
Kouyou is an excellent choice for artists who prefer a brush that settles naturally onto the surface when placing lacquer during Maki-e work.
---
## Two Hair Lengths for Different Applications
### Fine Detail 5 (15 mm Hair Length)
Provides excellent control for soft line work while also being well suited for detailed filling and Kintsugi.
### Fine Detail 7 (21 mm Hair Length)
The longer tip takes full advantage of Kouyou's softness and flexibility, making it ideal for long lines and gentle flowing curves.
---
## Suitable for Many Types of Fine Detail Work
Although developed for Maki-e, this brush is also suitable for:
* Ceramic decoration
* Kintsugi
* Nihonga (Japanese painting)
* Watercolor painting
* Any application requiring fine lines together with controlled paint application
---
# About the Fine Detail Series
Every brush in the Fine Detail Series has a **1.4 mm hair diameter**, allowing both delicate line work and controlled paint application.
Compared with the Ultra Fine Detail Series (0.7 mm hair diameter), these brushes contain more hair and therefore hold a greater amount of lacquer or paint.
While maintaining excellent fine-line performance, they are also well suited for placing lacquer or paint into small areas, making them useful for Maki-e, Nihonga, ceramic decoration, Kintsugi, and many other detailed techniques.
Each model uses a different hair combination to create its own balance of:
* Tip responsiveness
* Resilience
* Softness
* Flexibility
* Line control
Choose the model that best matches your preferred painting feel.
---
## Roukou (Weasel Hair / Saikouhou Goat Hair)
The sharpest and most responsive model in the series.
Outstanding tip control allows effortless handling of both straight and curved lines.
**Approximate Finest Line Width:** 0.10–0.20 mm
---
## Shikou (Muskrat Hair / Saikouhou Goat Hair)
A firm, resilient model capable of producing crisp, powerful fine lines.
While slightly less suited to expressive curves than Roukou, it excels at stable straight-line work.
**Approximate Finest Line Width:** 0.15–0.25 mm
---
## Kouyou (Saikouhou Goat Hair / Nylon)
A softer model with increased flexibility.
Suitable for both straight and curved lines while offering a gentle painting feel that naturally follows the surface.
**Approximate Finest Line Width:** 0.20–0.30 mm
---
## Kouma (Saikouhou Goat Hair / Horse Belly Hair / Nylon)
The softest and most flexible model in the series.
The brush tip gently spreads as it touches the surface, producing calm, controlled lines.
**Approximate Finest Line Width:** 0.25–0.35 mm
---
*Line width will vary depending on the lacquer or paint used, viscosity, paint load, brush pressure, and painting surface. The values above indicate approximate minimum line widths under ideal conditions.*
---
# Difference from the Ultra Fine Detail Series
The **Fine Detail Series** features a **1.4 mm hair diameter**, allowing the brush to hold more lacquer or paint for delicate filling work as well as fine line drawing.
The **Ultra Fine Detail Series**, by contrast, uses a **0.7 mm hair diameter** and is specifically designed for producing the finest possible lines.
Each Ultra Fine model has a hair length approximately **3 mm longer** than its Fine Detail counterpart. Combined with the smaller hair diameter, this creates an exceptionally delicate brush tip capable of producing even finer, lighter lines.
Like the Fine Detail Series, the Ultra Fine Detail Series is available in four different hair combinations.
**Approximate Finest Line Widths – Ultra Fine Detail Series**
* Roukou: 0.05–0.15 mm
* Shikou: 0.10–0.20 mm
* Kouyou: 0.15–0.25 mm
* Kouma: 0.20–0.30 mm
If your highest priority is producing the finest possible lines, choose the **Ultra Fine Detail Series**.
If you also require greater paint capacity for filling work and Kintsugi, the **Fine Detail Series** is the better choice.
