## Maki-e Fine Detail Series
Choose from four distinct brush types, each offering a different painting feel to match your technique and application.
The Kouyou Makie-fude saibyou was developed for drawing extremely fine, precise lines in Maki-e lacquer decoration, ceramic painting, and other detailed work.
Kouyou is designed for artists who prefer soft, smooth ultra-fine lines with a gentle, slightly adhesive painting feel.
---
## A Brush Tip Designed for Ultra-Fine Lines
The brush tip combines **Saikouhou**, one of the highest grades of goat hair known for its exceptionally fine natural tips and excellent point formation, with flexible nylon fibers.
By replacing the weasel hair used in the Roukou model with nylon, Kouyou offers a more affordable alternative while preserving the sharp, delicate brush tip made possible by Saikouhou.
Because nylon holds less lacquer or paint than natural hair, its proportion has been carefully limited, allowing Saikouhou goat hair to remain the primary material.
As a result, Kouyou has gentler resilience and spring than Roukou. When the brush touches the surface, the tip follows it with a subtle, slightly adhesive feel, producing smooth and controlled ultra-fine lines.
Although the lines are slightly broader than those produced by Roukou, they remain exceptionally delicate while offering a softer, calmer drawing experience.
For Maki-e artists who prefer a brush that settles naturally onto the surface rather than reacting too sharply when placing lacquer, Kouyou provides an excellent balance of control and comfort.
Despite sharing the same hair lengths as Roukou, Kouyou offers a distinctly softer, more flexible painting feel at a more accessible price point.
---
## Two Hair Lengths for Different Applications
### Fine Detail 6 (18 mm Hair Length)
The shorter tip offers excellent control for short strokes, intricate patterns, and detailed decorative work.
### Fine Detail 8 (24 mm Hair Length)
The longer tip takes full advantage of Kouyou's softness and flexibility, making it ideal for long lines and gentle flowing curves.
---
## Suitable for Many Types of Fine Detail Work
Although developed for Maki-e, this brush is also suitable for:
* Ceramic decoration
* Nihonga (Japanese painting)
* Watercolor painting
* Any application requiring extremely fine lines
---
# About the Fine Detail Series
Every brush in the Fine Detail Series has the same **0.7 mm hair diameter**, while different hair combinations create distinct painting characteristics.
All models are designed for ultra-fine line work, but each offers a different balance of:
* Tip responsiveness
* Resilience
* Softness
* Flexibility
* Line control
Choose the model that best matches your preferred painting feel.
---
## Roukou (Weasel Hair / Saikouhou Goat Hair)
The sharpest and most delicate model in the series.
Outstanding tip responsiveness allows effortless control of both straight and curved lines.
**Approximate Finest Line Width:** 0.05–0.15 mm
---
## Shikou (Muskrat Hair / Saikouhou Goat Hair)
A firm, resilient model capable of producing crisp, powerful fine lines.
While slightly less suited to expressive curves than Roukou, it excels at stable straight-line work.
**Approximate Finest Line Width:** 0.10–0.20 mm
---
## Kouyou (Saikouhou Goat Hair / Nylon)
A softer model than Roukou with increased flexibility.
Suitable for both straight and curved lines, offering a smooth, gentle painting feel that naturally follows the surface.
**Approximate Finest Line Width:** 0.15–0.25 mm
---
## Kouma (Saikouhou Goat Hair / Horse Belly Hair / Nylon)
The softest and most flexible model in the series.
The brush tip gently spreads as it touches the surface, producing calm, smooth, controlled lines.
**Approximate Finest Line Width:** 0.20–0.30 mm
---
*Line width will vary depending on the lacquer or paint used, viscosity, paint load, brush pressure, and painting surface. The values above indicate approximate minimum line widths under ideal conditions.*
---
# About the Ultra Fine Series
The **Fine Detail Series** features a **0.7 mm hair diameter** and is specifically designed for producing the finest possible lines.
The **Ultra Fine Series**, by comparison, uses a **1.4 mm hair diameter**, providing greater paint-holding capacity.
This makes it suitable not only for delicate line work but also for applications requiring more paint, such as filling areas and Kintsugi.
Like the Fine Detail Series, the Ultra Fine Series is available in four different hair combinations, each offered in two hair lengths.
