The Takasaki Daruma® Brush was jointly developed by the Gunma Daruma Manufacturers Cooperative Association and Shogetsudo in response to requests from craftsmen working in the production of Takasaki Daruma, the highest-produced Daruma dolls in Japan.
The mustache of a Takasaki Daruma is painted using a unique technique: first drawing long, fine lines,
then pressing the brush tip against the surface to create a fan-shaped stroke. Because this process is repeated hundreds or even thousands of times each day, the brush must maintain a sharp point and allow continuous use without frequent reshaping.
To meet these demands, the Takasaki Daruma® Brush features a specially designed brush head optimized for this traditional technique. The tip is slender and elongated, while the middle section is fuller and thicker, providing the following advantages:
• Draws consistently fine and beautiful lines
• Creates smooth fan-shaped strokes when the brush head is pressed down
• Returns to a sharp point simply by lifting the brush
This unique design significantly reduces the need to reshape the tip, allowing craftsmen to paint continuously and efficiently.
Even after prolonged use and natural wear, the brush remains easy to point and maintain. Reports from actual production workshops indicate that a single brush can be used to paint approximately 1,000 Daruma dolls.
Created to meet the exacting standards of traditional craftsmen, this is a professional brush designed specifically for Daruma artisans.

＜Development Story＞

The Takasaki Daruma® Brush was developed following a request from the Gunma Daruma Manufacturers Cooperative Association.

For many years, craftsmen used a dedicated brush for painting the distinctive mustaches of Takasaki Daruma. However, in recent years, the performance of existing brushes began to decline, and artisans reported that the brush tips no longer held their shape well enough for continuous painting.

In response, Shogetsudo partnered with Takasaki Daruma craftsmen to develop a new specialized brush. Through extensive testing, repeated prototyping, and ongoing refinement, a brush tailored specifically to the needs of Daruma production was created.

Painting Daruma mustaches requires a unique technique: the brush tip is pressed against the surface to spread the hairs, then lifted to immediately return to a sharp point. Achieving this behavior consistently in a production-grade brush proved to be a significant challenge.

Even after the prototype was completed, more than six months of further adjustments and improvements were required before the brush met the standards of professional craftsmen and received their approval.

Today, the Takasaki Daruma® Brush is used in Takasaki Daruma workshops and continues to support the artisans who preserve this treasured Japanese craft tradition.
